State Route 704 (known as SR 704 or the Cross-Base Highway) is a state highway located entirely in Pierce County, Washington, United States.It is intended to provide access between Interstate 5 (I-5) and SR 7 by passing through a portion of Joint Base Lewis–McChord, a major U.S. military installation.
Fort Lewis began as Camp Lewis in 1917, when the citizens of Pierce County voted by an eight-to-one margin to bond themselves for $2,000,000 (equivalent to $47,563,636 in 2023) to buy 68,721 acres (107.377 sq mi; 278.10 km 2) of land. They donated the land to the federal government for military use.
State Route 507 (SR 507) begins at a diamond interchange with Interstate 5 (I-5), co-signed as U.S. Route 12 (US 12) in Centralia. [3] Traveling east as Mellen, Alder and West Cherry Streets, [1] the highway crosses railroad tracks owned by BNSF Railway and used by Amtrak's Cascades and Coast Starlight routes, [4] both of which serve the Centralia Amtrak station. SR 311 heads west and south as Thompson Memorial Drive toward downtown Salem and north as Catawba Valley Drive toward Catawba and New Castle through the gap between Fort Lewis Mountain and Brushy Mountain formed by Mason Creek.
