Kay County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2020 census, its population was 43,700. [1] Its county seat is Newkirk, [2] and the largest city is Ponca City. Kay County comprises the Ponca City micropolitan statistical area. It is in north-central Oklahoma on the Kansas state line.
An election on September 3, 1908, gave Blackwell 2,038 votes, Newkirk 2,063, and Ponca City 1,388. Governor Haskell declared Newkirk the winner. Blackwell sued, but lost, and Newkirk retained the title. [9] The present Kay County courthouse was built in 1926, replacing the original 1894 wooden structure that had burned. [13]
