Wright State was founded in 1964 as a branch campus of both Miami University (Ohio) and Ohio State University.The school began its athletic program in 1968 as an NCAA Division II school, where the athletics program achieved great success, having over 200 All-American athletes and winning the 1983 Division II Men's Basketball national championship.

While the Raiders would not challenge for the conference title, the 2000-01 season was the best season since the 1992-93 season, and easily the best of the Ed Schilling era. 18 wins, a winning conference record, the fourth seed in the conference tournament; the season would again end with a loss to Butler University who would go on to upset Wake Forest in the NCAA tournament.
