A rule of thumb is to "derate" by 125%, so if it's a 1500W heater, that x 125% = 1875 watts, a bit more than 15A. To solve that problem, they actually make "light" switches with much tougher design and heavier ampacity rating. You can get 20A or 30A rated switches at the local home store. They are quite a bit larger.

Last night I started fiddling with the unit but found two white wires versus a black and white. I made a to guess which of the two white wires were hot - hooked everything up to an extension cord in the shop and the ...

I replaced the dusk to dawn sensor on the top of it, and now the socket is getting power but the bulb is not working. Go back to the store and got a 175 watt mercury vapor ...

Then rewire the light to a regular sized bulb holder . You should only need a black white and green or hot. neutral and ground . Screw in an LED it'll be fine.
Replace Mercury Vapor outdoor lights. I recently bought an older home in Texas that has mercury vapor landscape lighting. The lighting in the front yard doesn't work and trips the breaker, due to what appears to be a bad ballast on one of the lights. I haven't used my voltage tester on it yet, but I presume the wiring coming into the ballast is ...

Your wall switch and the photcell. In my experience photcells can take a few mins to figure out if its dark or light. klie-de-sys.
People, Have an older lamp in parking lot, looks like the mercury vapor bulb quit, and wanting to convert the fixture to led. The bulb is 175W. It screws on to the socket. It lit up the whole area at night. I can remove the ballast inside, and wire directly to the socket, and bulb should light up with the photo sensor when dark.
Some mercury vapor lamp ballasts are a "straight coil" where the "high" strike voltage given to the lamp (to jump the gap between the two electrodes in the lamp) is dropped solely due to the increasing current draw of the lamp versus the constant impedance of the coil. (Volts across the coil equals amperes times impedance).
No matter the reason, figuring out light switches that do nothing is usually a pretty simple task. The Lamp Test. The least technical test -- and the one that requires no additional investment -- is the lamp test. Carry a lamp from outlet to outlet, plugging it in to each one and flipping the switch on and off as you go.
