On January 20, 2009 Heartland announced that it had been "the victim of a security breach within its processing system in 2008". [8] The data stolen included the digital information encoded onto the magnetic stripe built into the backs of credit and debit cards; with that data, thieves can fashion counterfeit credit cards by imprinting the same stolen information onto fabricated cards. [9]
On June 5, various organizations in the United Kingdom, including the BBC, British Airways, Boots, Aer Lingus, and payroll service Zellis were breached. [4] On June 6, Cl0p claimed responsibility for the attack on its site on the dark web. Cl0p claimed that the data stole from governments had been deleted (this was later disproved). [2]
The stolen data contains records for people in the US, UK, and Canada. [13] [14] National Public Data confirmed on August 16, 2024, there was a breach originating from someone trying to breach their systems since December 2023, with the breach occurring from April 2024 and over the next few months.
