The series was based on the 1973 made-for-TV movie Sunshine and DeYoung, Bill Mumy , Corey Fischer , and Meg Foster all reprised their roles from the film.
In the final season of the show, the absence of the family members (except Laura) was explained by their relocation to Burr Oak, Iowa, in search of a better life. However, several months later, the series was cancelled. In the opening credits, there was a scene of one of the twins running in a meadow with the credit "Lindsay Sidney Greenbush".
