In all major scales with flat key signatures, the tonic in a major key is a perfect fourth below the last flat. When there is more than one flat, the tonic is the note of the second-to-last flat in the signature. In environments where the or 𝄳 symbol is not supported, or in specific text notation, a half flat can be written as d, etc. Likewise, a flat and a half can also be written as d ♭, db, etc. [citation needed] To allow extended just intonation, composer Ben Johnston uses a flat as an accidental to indicate a note is lowered 70.6 cents. Its relative major is F-sharp major (or enharmonically G-flat major). Its parallel major, D-sharp major, [2] is usually replaced by E-flat major, since D-sharp major's two double-sharps make it impractical to use. Its enharmonic equivalent, E-flat minor, has six flats. The D-sharp natural minor scale is:
The chord is favored by Pixies lead guitarist Joey Santiago, with D 7 ♯ 9, reminiscent of the opening to "A Hard Day's Night", opening and being called the "secret ingredient" of the song "Here Comes Your Man". A "brutally scraped" F 7 ♯ 9 features in the chorus of "Tame" against the three chord rhythm guitar part's D, C, and F chords. [27]
C-sharp major, the enharmonic equivalent to D-flat major, has seven sharps, whereas D-flat major only has five flats; thus D-flat major is often used as the parallel major for C-sharp minor. (The same enharmonic situation occurs with the keys of A-flat major and G-sharp minor , and to some extent, with the keys of G-flat major and F-sharp minor ).
