The Greater Seminole Field was one of the most important oil fields ever found and is still producing. Seminole competed to be the county seat of Seminole County, but lost to Wewoka. [7] The town of Seminole was incorporated as a city in December 1924. [8] Upon the discovery of a high-producing oil well in the city in 1926, Seminole transformed from a town of 854 to a boom town of 25,000 to 30,000 residents.
The Seminole County Courthouse is a two-story red brick courthouse building whose original, central portion was built in 1927. It was expanded in 1939 in a Works Progress Administration project, and other renovation was done in the 1970s, compatibly with the original design. [ 2 ]
