The Nine Dots Puzzle is the first known puzzle game where the player has to connect dots. But in this variant the goal is not to draw a picture, but to solve a logic puzzle. The emergence of connect the dots games in the printed press takes place in the early 20th century.

The task requires the subject to connect 25 consecutive targets on a sheet of paper or a computer screen, in a manner to like that employed in connect-the-dots exercises. There are two parts to the test. In the first, the targets are all the whole numbers from 1 to 25, and the subject must connect them in numerical order.
The "nine dots" puzzle (left) has the goal of linking all 9 dots using four straight lines or less, without lifting the pen. Its solution (right) is to draw those lines "outside the box". Since at least 1954, the nine dots puzzle has been used as a metaphor of the type "think beyond the boundary".
