Almora town was the administrative headquarters of the Kumaun district; which was formed in 1815 following the defeat of Gorkha army in the Anglo-Gorkha war and the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli. The Kumaun district then consisted of the complete Kumaon Division excluding the Terai district with its headquarters at Kashipur . [ 4 ]

Almora Lok Sabha constituency is one of the five Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies in Uttarakhand. This constituency came into existence in 1952, following the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies. It comprises four districts namely Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh.
In 2000, the new state of Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh, including Kumaon. The people of Kumaon are known as Kumaonis and speak the Kumaoni language. Kumaon is home to a famous Indian Army regiment, the Kumaon Regiment. The hill town Nainital is its administrative centre and this is where the Uttarakhand high court is located. [8]
Dwarahat is a town in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, India.Situated at an elevation of 1,510 meters (4,950 feet) in the Kumaon region, Dwarahat is known for its cultural heritage and historical significance, particularly related to the ancient Katyuri dynasty which ruled the region from the 7th to the 11th century.

National Highway 109 connects Chaukhutia to the cities of Almora, Dwarahat, Karnaprayag and Haldwani. Regular buses ply between Chaukhutia and Ramnagar. There have been plans to link Chaukhutia to Ramnagar with a Rail line. [3] This rail line would be instrumental in bringing Gairsain, the proposed capital of Uttarakhand, on the Railway map. [4]
