Fretwell retired as chancellor in 1989. He served as interim president of the University of Massachusetts system from 1991 to 1992, and in 1998, he served as the interim president of the University of North Florida. In 1996 UNC Charlotte opened the Fretwell building, dedicated in honor of him and his wife Dorrie.
The USF College of Nursing was founded in 1973, [2] enrolling its charter class into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
