Louisiana state parks have many accommodations, including overnight cabins, boating rentals, guided daily tours, and fishing piers. In 2002, Louisiana state parks had more than 2 million visitors. [2] With the addition of Palmetto Island State Park in 2010, Louisiana state parks comprise more than 30,000 acres (12,000 ha) of land.
Fishing is a supported at the park via a 48 slip marina, boat launch, fish cleaning station, and concession area. Fisherman may expect to catch largemouth bass, black crappie, blue gill and channel catfish. [1] Visitors may take advantage of the .5 miles (0.80 km) walking trail near Bayou Macon, but should be advised of black bears. [1]
The Meeman Museum and Nature Center— named for conservationist and journalist Edward J. Meeman, the former editor of the Memphis Press-Scimitar, — is located on the park's grounds. The park covers 12,539 acres (50.74 km 2) and is the most visited state park in Tennessee. [1] The unincorporated community Shelby Forest is adjacent to the park.
Also, there are 6 cabins on the park grounds which may be reserved by guests. Chitimacha tradition says that one of 4 markers for their tribal land was a great cypress, at present-day Cypremort Point State Park. [5] Cypremort Point is one of the few spots on the Louisiana Gulf coastline which may be accessed by road.
