Shore Line East (SLE) is a commuter rail service which operates along the Northeast Corridor through southern Connecticut, United States. The rail service is a fully owned subsidiary of the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) and is operated under the CT Rail brand.
On June 24, 2002, South Norwalk was added as an eastbound stop for one morning Shore Line East originating at Stamford. [7] All Shore Line East trips serving Stamford were suspended on March 16, 2020. [8] [9] One Shore Line East round trip resumed serving Stamford on October 7, 2024, but did not stop at South Norwalk. By the mid-2000s, ridership increases rendered the station's 137-space free parking lot for Shore Line East riders insufficient, causing commuters to park in the adjacent Saybrook Junction Marketplace parking lot and along roads in town. In November 2011, the Marketplace began charging a fee for commuters to park in their lot. [7]
Shore Line East and Metro-North work together on schedules to provide quick transfers of trains for commuters traveling from the Shoreline to Grand Central Terminal or Stamford. [18] Metro-North operates New Haven Yard on the east side of the tracks, opposite Amtrak's yard. Work is done here, as well as the storing of train cars and locomotives.
Greater Bridgeport Transit was established in 1971 in anticipation of diminished bus service by the Connecticut Company, which officially ceased operations in Bridgeport in 1972.
