Five colour-coded frequent bus routes (the High Frequency Services) run through Christchurch's major road corridors, connecting people to popular destinations.
Little River is approximately 30 minutes drive from Akaroa, a tourist destination on Banks Peninsula, and 45 minutes drive from Christchurch. It is on State Highway 75, which links Christchurch and Akaroa. The road from Christchurch is at sea level but once past Little River, the road rises steeply to the top of the summit road.
State Highway 75 (SH 75) is a state highway in New Zealand servicing the Banks Peninsula region, connecting Christchurch on the northwestern part of the peninsula with Akaroa towards the east coast. It is wholly two lane (with the exception of some passing lanes near Hilltop), but partially functions as a major arterial corridor of Christchurch.
It is located approximately 10 kilometres (6 mi) from the main town on the Banks Peninsula, Akaroa. It is 86km (90 minutes drive) from Christchurch. The sandy beach is popular with tourists and has a river estuary emptying into the bay. The settlement itself contains the Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum. [1]

State Highway 75 passes through the centre of the village, connecting Christchurch with Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula. The Tai Tapu Hotel was established in 1856 and is located 1 km north of the town centre on a scenic country road. It has a large outdoor dining area that looks over the Halswell River with views to the Tai Tapu Golf Course.
The name Akaroa is an alternative spelling of Whakaroa, [3] Whangaroa or Wangaloa [4] from the Kāi Tahu dialect of Māori. Whakaroa means "Long Harbour". [5] The harbour was used commercially in the mid-19th century for ship-based and shore-based whaling. [6] Cruise ships occasionally enter the harbour, with the passengers visiting Akaroa. [7]
