The Cannonball is a seasonal named train operated by the Long Island Rail Road between Penn Station in New York City and Montauk on the east end of Long Island, New York.The train operates weekly between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend, operating eastbound on Fridays and westbound on Sundays, with westbound service also being offered through Columbus Day weekend.
The line was built in 1892 by William Seward Webb, a Vanderbilt in-law, [2] as the Mohawk & Malone Railway and was purchased from him in 1893 by the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. [3] Its successor from 1913, the New York Central Railroad, ran passenger trains on the route until April 24, 1965.
The train initially operated as a section of the New York–Buffalo Empire State Express. [ 9 ] Initially, the Adirondack used the same routing as its D&H predecessors, running over the former Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad via Watervliet and Mechanicville, New York , and over the Schenectady–Mechanicville freight bypass to Saratoga.
On April 16, 2019, New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele announced that funding to design improvements on the Montauk Branch would likely be included in the 2019–2020 state budget. The funding would be used by the LIRR to design three passing sidings to be installed on the line in single-track territory between Speonk and Montauk.
