Capitol Hill (Former Japanese name: 中山, Nakayama; sometimes spelled Capital Hill, [2] formerly Army Hill under the United States Navy [3]) is a settlement (sometimes termed a village or district) on the island of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. Capitol Hill is the seat of government for the Commonwealth, but the judicial branch is headquartered at the House of Justice in Susupe. Despite Susupe's considerable distance from Capitol Hill, both settlements are officially located within the municipal boundaries of Saipan, and neither settlement has any official status.
The administrative center is Capitol Hill, a village in northwestern Saipan. The current governor of the CNMI is Arnold Palacios, who entered office in January 2023. The legislative branch has a 9-member Senate and a 20-member House of Representatives.
One of the island's main thoroughfares, Beach Road , runs through Chalan Kanoa and connects it to the rest of the island. As tourism is a large part of Saipan's economy, there are quite a few hotels located in the village. These include the recently renovated Chalan Kanoa Beach Hotel, The Aquarius Beach Tower and several small hotels.
Garapan was a minor settlement during the Spanish colonial period of Saipan, and a location to which the Chamorros forcibly relocated from other islands in the Northern Marianas were housed before being transferred to Guam. The forced transfer of the Chamorros to Guam was completed by 1749 and Saipan was recorded as uninhabited.
