Lion-sur-Mer is located on the edge of the English Channel, more precisely on the Côte de Nacre (Mother of Pearl Coast), about 15 km (9.3 mi) North of Caen.. The beach is made of fine sand and is bordered, to the west, by middle-sized cliffs.

Between the 13th and 16th century the statue, known as Notre-Dame de la Mer ("Our Lady of the Sea"), became a popular object of pilgrimage, bringing prosperity to the town. In around 1100 a new church was built on the site and over the next few centuries underwent numerous changes, such as the addition of a choir in the 14th century.
