Jenny Wiley State Resort Park was founded as Dewey Lake State Park on January 1, 1954, with Dewey Lake near Prestonsburg, Kentucky as its centerpiece. It was renamed in the early 1950s for Virginia "Jenny" Wiley , a pioneer woman who is remembered as a survivor of captivity by Native Americans .
The park features include a 24-room lodge with restaurant, 12 cottages, campground, multi-purpose trails, 18-hole golf course, and 56-acre (23 ha) lake with non-motorized boat rentals. [1] The park was sited around an existing lake, behind a dam originally built in 1938.
The 1,100-acre (4 km 2) lake was formed by impounding John's Creek in 1949, and was named for Admiral George Dewey. [4] Dewey Dam (National ID # KY03029) is an earthen dam, 118 feet (36 m) high. The length of the lake is 18.5 miles (29.8 km) upstream from the dam and its water shed covers 207 square miles (540 km 2 ).
