Access to the ships is through Mallows Bay Park, operated by the county, located at 1440 Wilson Landing Road in Nanjemoy, Maryland. A 0.8-mile (1.3 km) trail loops around the park and the salvage basin. In 2010, a boat ramp and pier for recreational use was constructed to provide access to the Potomac River.
The most recent county formation in Maryland occurred in 1872 when Garrett County was split from Allegany County. [2] However, there have been numerous changes to county borders since that time, most recently when portions of the city of Takoma Park that had previously been part of Prince George's County were absorbed into Montgomery County in 1997.
Depending on conditions, parts of the creek are navigable by light watercraft, such as kayaks or canoes. Near Riley’s Lock there is a boat ramp into the creek which provides access to the Potomac River. An area of about 6,300 acres (25 km 2) along 14.75 miles (23.74 km) of the creek has been set aside as Seneca Creek State Park.
The Maryland-Virginia border, which also serves as both the boundary between Charles County and Virginia's Stafford County and the western boundary of the sanctuary, is demarcated by the mean low tide mark on the Virginia shoreline, placing nearly the entire river in Maryland [8] and the entire sanctuary in Maryland waters in Charles County. [7]

All navigable parts of the river were designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2006, [7] and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) designated an 18-square-mile (47 km 2) portion of the river in Charles County, Maryland, as the Mallows Bay–Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary in 2019.
