They established formal diplomatic relations in 1947 in anticipation of Burma's independence. In the early 1950s, the United States supported elements of the defeated Chinese Nationalist military which fled to Burma after their defeat in the Chinese Civil War. This support caused strain in the Burma-United States relationship.
