Mary Robertson was born in Louisville, Kentucky, [2] on December 18, 1902. [3] She was one of five children of Alfcanis and Viola (née Pittman) Robertson. Her mother died of cancer at the age of 41. Unable to care for five young children, Alfcanis Robertson placed Mary in a foster home.
