Gurley Novelty or simply Gurley was a candle-making company that existed throughout the second half of the 20th century. Gurley was known for making small, figurine-shaped candles for the main holidays, most notably Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween. The company was owned by Franklin Gurley, who also designed the candles.
The Hurricane 130 was designed by James E. Biersach of Alerting Communicators of America (ACA) and was presented at a Civil Defense convention in November 1968. ACA had also manufactured sirens during this time and utilized new fiberglass casting techniques, which was never before used by any other manufacturers.
The chimney is used for a more important duty. The mantle/wick holder has holes around the outer edges. When the lantern is lit and a chimney is attached, the thermally induced draft draws air through these holes and passes over the top of the mantle, just as a chimney in a house. This has a cooling effect and keeps the mantle from overheating.
