Bandyopadhyay's first major independent professional work was in the fields of palaeography and epigraphy. He won the Jubilee Research Prize of the Calcutta University for The Origin of the Bengali Script published in 1919. A major general ranks above the one-star rank of brigadier and below the three-star rank of lieutenant general. The equivalent rank in the Indian Navy is rear admiral and in the Indian Air Force is air vice marshal.
