The network was founded as the Educational Television and Radio Center (ETRC) in November 1952 by a grant from the Ford Foundation's Fund for Adult Education (FAE). It was originally a limited service for exchanging and distributing educational television programs produced by local television stations to other stations; it did not produce any material by itself.
PBS Digital Studios is a non-profit organization through which PBS distributes original educational web video content. Based in Arlington, Virginia , it comprises both original series and partnerships with existing YouTube channels.

NIT would become an independent, self-supporting non-profit organisation in 1970, and would begin distribution of children's educational programming to PBS, the successor to NIT's former operator, NET. On April 11, 1973, NIT would be incorporated into the Agency for Instructional Television (AIT).
In 2021, PBS announced that their TV channels will change their channel logo branding and a channel name change as well with TVM2 changing its name to TVMNews+ (now known as TVM+), these changes were met with criticism and in 2023, PBS quietly updated its logo branding on their TV and radio services. The font used for the "PBS" identification was designed specifically for the network. It was first seen at the PBS annual meeting on March 30, 1984, and went into official use on September 30 as the channel officially went by the PBS abbreviation. The logo is also used on PBS Home Video.
