GCSEs are the equivalent to a Scottish National level 5 (Nat5), A Levels are the equivalent to an SQA Highers. Both more advanced and less advanced examinations are offered by the SQA, National level 3, National level 4 (equivalent to a Btec) National level 5 (equivalent to GCSE), Higher (equivalent to A Levels) and Advanced higher.
They have been designed jointly by universities, colleges and employers, and are available in a range of work-related subjects. They are broadly equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor's degree.or ordinary National Diploma/Certificate Foundation Degrees are at level 5 on the FHEQ; they are not offered in Scotland.
(Note that QCF levels 1-3 are equivalent to EQF levels 2-4.) The QCF does not include previous qualifications that are now defunct, such as the O Level which was replaced by GCSEs in 1988.
