Twelfth rib syndrome. Twelfth rib syndrome, also known as rib tip syndrome, is a painful condition that occurs as a result of highly mobile floating ribs. It commonly presents as pain that may be felt in the lower back or lower abdominal region as a result of the 11th or 12th mobile rib irritating the surrounding tissues and nervous systems.
Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (ACNES) is a nerve entrapment condition that causes chronic pain of the abdominal wall. [1] It occurs when nerve endings of the lower thoracic intercostal nerves (7–12) are 'entrapped' in abdominal muscles, causing a severe localized nerve (neuropathic) pain that is usually experienced at the front of the abdomen.
Functional abdominal pain syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder. [4] Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGD) are common medical conditions characterized by recurrent and persistent gastrointestinal symptoms caused by improper functioning of the enteric system in the absence of any identifiable organic or structural pathology, such as ulcers, inflammation, tumors or masses.
The most frequent presenting symptoms are abdominal pain and tachycardia. [10] The abdominal pain is typically severe, colicky, poorly localized, and often associated with pain in back and legs. [10] [11] Patients may also present with vomiting and constipation, but diarrhea is unusual. [11]
Costovertebral angle tenderness. Costovertebral angle (CVA) tenderness is pain that results from touching the region inside of the costovertebral angle. [1] The CVA is formed by the 12th rib and the spine. [1] Assessing for CVA tenderness is part of the abdominal exam, and CVA tenderness often indicates kidney pathology.
