The .45-70 (11.6x53mmR), also known as the .45-70 Government, .45-70 Springfield, and .45-2 1 ⁄ 10" Sharps, is a .45 caliber rifle cartridge originally holding 70 grains of black powder that was developed at the U.S. Army's Springfield Armory for use in the Springfield Model 1873.

Derived from the .50-60-400 Joslyn, the cartridge was developed after the unsatisfactory results of the .58 rimfire cartridge for the Springfield Model 1865 rifle. The .50-70 Government cartridge used the Benét internal center-fire primer design and became the official cartridge of the U.S. military in 1866 until being replaced by the .45-70 Government in 1873.
It loaded cartridges made at the Evansville-Chrysler plant across town and then packed them in shipping crates for shipment. In November, 1943 it was the first plant to package ammo in vacuum-packed metal cans. In the Spring and Summer of 1944 it was employed in inspecting and repacking .45 ACP and .30 Carbine ammunition.
It was used for pistol and submachine gun ammunition and held 2,000 rounds in cartons (100 x 20-round cartons or 40 x 50-round cartons). It could also be used to hold 960 rounds of Caliber .30 ammo (48 x 20-round cartons) or 240 rounds of Caliber .50 (24 x 10-round cartons) ammo.
