Though round barns were not as popular as some other barn designs, their unique shape makes them noticeable. The years from 1880 to 1920 represent the height of round barn construction. [1]
The Department of Dairy Husbandry, seeking to increase milk productivity by promoting efficiency, prompted the Experiment Station to construct the Experimental Dairy Farm at an area known as South Farms. The barn was built by DeVern Bates for James Clifford Young after his previous barn burned down in 1914. Bates was familiar with circular barn design having designed one for the University of Illinois in 1910. It is a two-story structure, with a large square entrance bay, and a diameter of 80 feet (24 m).
