Orbis International is an international non-profit non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to saving sight worldwide. [1] [non-primary source needed] Its programs focus on the prevention of blindness and the treatment of blinding eye diseases in developing countries through hands-on training, public health education, advocacy and local partnerships. The hospital was founded in 1808 by Dr William Henry Goldwyer as "The Institution for the Cure of Disease of the Eye Amongst the Poor" in Lower Maudlin Street. [5] In 1839, and again in 1898, it expanded into adjoining buildings.
