In July 1970, Phillips left Genesis after three years citing illness with glandular fever and worsening stage fright. Tom Phillips began his career in music as Jerry Lee Lewis' road manager for a number of years. He had invested all of his savings into an upcoming 1958 European tour when news of Lewis' marriage to his 13-year-old cousin hit the front pages. Lewis' career came to a sudden, although temporary, halt. The tour was cancelled, and Tom was broke.
Phillips used the same technique (always with the Mallock source material) in many of his other works, including the illustration of his own translation of Dante's Inferno (published in 1985). He was also fond of re-using images from postcards (which he avidly collected), as well as drawing stencil-style lettering, freehand.
