The association formally incorporated in 1904. [1] As part of its early efforts, the association worked to secure state legislation that required the registration of nurses. In 1907 the group lobbied for the establishment of a standard curriculum for nursing schools. The association also supported the introduction of a graduate program in nursing.
The Indiana University Training School for Nurses was established at Indianapolis in 1914; its first student arrived on June 19, 1914. [3] At the time of its founding, the IU program was one of about 1,800 nursing schools in operation in the United States.
