In 1963, the state passed the Road Reclassification Act to fix the by now fragmented state highway system. Many state highways had state maintenance gaps and several highway segments were even isolated from the rest of the system. State highways were classified into primary, secondary, and service roads.
It ran more or less along the alignment of modern Route 147. In the 1932 state highway renumbering, [2] old Highway 330 was renumbered to Route 147. At the same time, the Middlefield-Middletown route was created as Route 157. By 1938, Route 157 took over the Durham Road portion of Route 147.
The road continues north for another three miles (5 km) before ending at an intersection with Route 67 in northern Southbury. The entire route is known as South Britain Road and is classified as a collector road. It carries average volumes of 7,000 vehicles per day. [1]
