The Sri Lankan Rupee (Sinhala: රුපියල්, Tamil: ரூபாய்; symbol: රු (plural) in English, රු in Sinhala, ௹ in Tamil; ISO code: LKR) is the currency of Sri Lanka. It is subdivided into 100 cents (Sinhala: සත, Tamil: சதம்), but cents are rarely seen in circulation due to its low value.
In 2009 the 1000 rupees note commemorating the end of the Sri Lankan Civil War and the Ushering of Peace and Prosperity note was issued. The note is dated two days after the end of the war as 2009-05-20. The note is the first time since 1954, that an image of a living person has been used on Sri Lankan currency notes.
To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued a new series of banknotes on 4 February 2011. The series was designed by two Sri Lankan artists selected from an island-wide competition. The themes of the new notes are Development and Prosperity, and Sri Lankan Dancers.

On 7 May 1970, the Sultanate of Oman replaced the Gulf rupee with the Omani rial unit that was created at par with the pound sterling, so ending the existence of the Gulf rupee. Two years later, after the pound sterling was allowed to float on 23 June 1972, the Omani rial began to diverge from its sterling parity.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has issued commemorative coins since 1957. On 15 December 2010, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued a Frosted Proof crown size multi-colour silver commemorative coin in the denomination of Rupees 5000 for the bank's 60th anniversary.
