Percentile scores and percentile ranks are often used in the reporting of test scores from norm-referenced tests, but, as just noted, they are not the same. For percentile ranks, a score is given and a percentage is computed. Percentile ranks are exclusive: if the percentile rank for a specified score is 90%, then 90% of the scores were lower.

The figure illustrates the percentile rank computation and shows how the 0.5 × F term in the formula ensures that the percentile rank reflects a percentage of scores less than the specified score. For example, for the 10 scores shown in the figure, 60% of them are below a score of 4 (five less than 4 and half of the two equal to 4) and 95% are ...

Though the 10th percentile of American households have zero net worth, the 90th percentile has $1.6 million of household wealth. [9] Higher educational attainment in the US corresponds with median household wealth. [10] Some definitions of class look only at numerical measures, such as wealth or income.
A moderately robust measure of central tendency - known as the decile mean - can be computed by making use of a sample's deciles to (= 10th percentile, = 20th percentile and so on). It is calculated as follows: [3]
