The WIAA started adding girls sports in the 1970s. Swimming (1970) was the first, followed by gymnastics, track, and tennis in 1971, golf (1972), and volleyball (1973). Cross country joined the list in 1975, then basketball and softball (1976). Girls' soccer added a state tournament in 1983. Ice hockey was added in 2002.

Source: [62] Of the 32 Division I athletic conferences that sponsor softball, 30 end their regular seasons with a single-elimination tournament or a double elimination tournament. The teams in each conference that win their regular season title are given the number one seed in each tournament.
The Big Ten reinstated the conference tournament in 2013 and has been held at the conclusion of the regular season ever since. Tournaments held in 1982 and 1995–2003 used a double elimination format. Tournaments from 2004–2008 and 2013–present have used a single elimination format. [1] [2]
The 2018 Big Ten softball tournament was held at Goodman Softball Complex on the campus of University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin from May 10 through May 12, 2018. As the tournament winner, Minnesota earned the Big Ten Conference's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division I softball tournament. All games of the tournament aired on BTN.

A total of 64 teams compete in the tournament. 32 teams gain automatic entry into the tournament while the other 32 are selected by the Division I Softball committee. From this field of 64, 16 teams will be given "national seeds" and placed at one of the assigned regional sites, often the home field of each national seed.
