The college began with 231 students in high schools and military installations with administrative offices located at Billy Mitchell Village. As of 2007–2008, the college had 7,662 students enrolled. The college is set on nearly 126 acres (0.51 km 2) of land. Palo Alto College has over 100 staff members and full-time faculty members.
Palo Alto University traces its origins back to 1975 when the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology was founded in Palo Alto. PGSP was established by a group of students and faculty seeking to enhance their knowledge of clinical psychology, with Robert Kantor serving as its first president. In 1984, PGSP welcomed Allen Calvin as its president.
In the mid-1950s Palo Alto had a railroad village feel and the streets were lined with bungalows and prim storefronts. At a time when only 7 percent of American adults had completed four years of college, more than a third of men living in the Palo Alto suburb had a college degree. [64]
The college opened in 1985 and is located in the Southside of San Antonio. In 1987, he was awarded the first Palo Alto College Teaching Excellence Award ($2,000/laptop) voted at-large by the Faculty Senate, and the following year, the National Council of Teachers of English awarded him the English Journal Writing Award.
