In 1984, Mazda Australia decided to produce a convertible by joining an RX-7 front body with a 626 coupee rear end. To ensure rigidity, steel channel beams were welded to the floor pan. Due to the added weight, the engine used was the Japanese model 12AT introduced in 1983 rated at 121 kW (162 hp) at 6,500rpm.
