Pittsfield High School (PHS) traces its founding to 1844 when a town meeting voted to establish the community's first high school. Six years later in November 1850, PHS opened in a three-room wooden building on a site occupied by the current city hall. Several sites and buildings later, the current facility opened on September 9, 1931. [6]

Goldklang owned and operated the Pittsfield Mets. In March 2024, the FCBL announced that the Suns would not play the 2024 season because of safety issues at Wahconah Park. [6] In the summer, concerts are held in Wahconah Park. It is also home to varsity football games for Pittsfield-area high schools.
Both Pittsfield high schools are known for their baseball and softball prowess. Taconic High School won state championships in 2017 and 2019 and reached the Final Four in 2023. It was the No. 1 overall seed in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division III bracket in 2022 and beat city-rival Pittsfield High three times.
The PHS mascot is the Saukees, with school colors of red and black. The school has 3 state championships on record in team athletics and activities: IDTA Pom A in 2009, Boys Basketball in 1990–1991 (A), and Boys Golf in 1982–1983 (A). Pittsfield's Old Central High School is located northeast of the city center, on the east side of the old town common. It is a U-shaped 3-1/2 story masonry structure, finished primarily in cream-colored brick, with marble trim and terra cotta detailing. It has a hipped roof pierced by dormers, and is set on a high sandstone foundation.
