As per the description, it looks like the Microsoft Exchange data file is the default Outlook data file. If that is correct, then to resolve the issue, you may create a new data file (.PST) and set is as default. After which close and re-open Outlook and then remove the Exchange mailbox by right clicking on the data file in the Navigation Pane.
