Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System (MDS) is an automobile engine variable displacement technology. It debuted in 2005 on the 5.7 L modern Hemi V8.Like Mercedes-Benz's Active Cylinder Control, General Motors' Active Fuel Management, and Honda's Variable Cylinder Management, it deactivates four of the V8's cylinders when the throttle is closed or at steady speeds.
Chrysler developed its first experimental hemi engine for the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft. The XIV-2220 was an inverted V16 rated at 2,500 hp (1,860 kW). The P-47 was already in production with a Pratt & Whitney radial engine when the XIV-2220 flew successfully in trials in 1945 as a possible upgrade, but the war was winding down and it did not go into production.
The Hemi-6 is a pushrod O.H.V. (overhead valve engine), with combustion chambers comprising about 35% of the top of the globe. This creates what is known as a low hemispherical shaped chamber. In this way, the "Hemi" moniker was used for the same kind of marketing cachet as Chrysler's 1950s-1970s Hemi V8 engines.
In 2001, the engine was fitted with a variable intake control system which boosted output to 180 hp (134 kW) at 5000 rpm and 210 lb⋅ft (285 N⋅m) at 4000 rpm. The engine was especially suited for transverse applications in Chrysler's minivans, but was also used in a longitudinal front-wheel-drive setup on 1993-1997 LH platform cars.
2005 was the last year for the first version of the 5.7 L (345 cu in) Hemi V8. 2006 half-ton models offered the Multi-Displacement System Hemi V8 engine that also became available in Chrysler and Dodge sedans. This engine featured the same performance but had a cylinder-deactivating feature enabled under light loads to increase fuel economy by ...
2003–present: Hemi. 5.7L Hemi - The smallest modern Hemi engine, called the Eagle, introduced in 2002. 6.1L Hemi - A larger modern Hemi, 2004–2010. 6.4L Hemi - A larger bore modern Hemi engine, called the Apache, introduced in 2011. 6.2L Hemi - A supercharged Hemi engine, called the Hellcat, introduced in 2014.
The optional engine, available on all non-PHEV Grand Cherokee trims aside from the Laredo, Altitude, and Limited, is the 5.7 L Hemi V8 gasoline engine with the Multi Displacement System (MDS) cylinder deactivation system, producing 360 horsepower (365 PS; 268 kW), and 390 lb⋅ft (529 N⋅m; 54 kg⋅m) of torque.
The Hemi V8 retained the Multiple Displacement System (MDS) that shuts down four cylinders in low-power driving situations, and the V8 remains coupled with the multi-speed automatic transmission which includes Electronic Range Selection (ERS) to manually limit the high gear operating range.
