Kirchenfest, which is German for "Church Festival," is one of the largest church festivals in Southern Illinois. [1] The event spreads over six acres on the grounds of St. Paul Parish. It originally began in 1970. The festival has a German theme, as the Highland, Illinois community is primarily Swiss and German heritage. Events at the Kirchenfest:
Three local attractions are the Flambro Head Museum and Cafe, the Lower Island Cove Regatta and the Old Methodist Church Cemetery. Operated by the Flambo Head Heritage Society, the Museum hosts a 1/2 km walking trail, a coffee shop, a playground complete with picnic tables. The original building housed the "Lower Island Cove" telephone exchange.
A Mass of thanksgiving is celebrated at the shrine of St. Joseph the Worker on the grounds of St. Thomas Aquinas Church. The shrine was erected by Msgr. John P. Boland, known as the "Labor Priest." Msgr. Boland was noted for his contributions to the New York State Little Wagner Act. The parade and Mass are followed by a picnic in Caz Park.
