It serves the city of Clarksville, Tennessee, on its way to Nashville, where it briefly runs concurrently with US 41.

U.S. Route 41 Alternate (US 41 Alt.) was an alternate route of US 41 that existed from Atlanta to Marietta, Georgia. It traversed portions of Fulton and Cobb counties. At least as early as 1919, SR 3 traveled on essentially the same path as it currently does in these two cities. [ 14 ]
