Prelude to war. Iowa had become the 29th state in the Union on December 28, 1846. [2] Settlers had defeated the Sauk, Meskwaki, and Ho-Chunk during the 1832 Black Hawk War, resulting in lopsided treaties ceding land to the settlers. Future treaties forced out these and Dakota peoples and opened nearly all land to settlers. [3]
Colonel Kittredge had previously served as a captain with the 7th Iowa Infantry Regiment in Missouri during the first year of the war and was an experienced combat veteran. The 25th Iowa Infantry was organized at Mount Pleasant, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on September 27, 1862. They were immediately sent north to Minnesota assigned to the Department of the Northwest. There four companies were posted at Camp Lincoln Mankato and South Bend. [1]
