last week I updated windows and since then the speakers on my computer haven't worked. I think the problem is that my computer doesn't recognize its speakers because they don't appear in any "output devices" list.
1. Check your speaker output. 2. Run the audio troubleshooter. 3. Verify that all Windows Updates are installed. 4. Check your cables, plugs, jacks, volume, speaker, and headphone connections. 5. Check sound settings. 6. Fix your audio drivers. 7. Set your audio device as the default device. 8. Turn off audio enhancements. 9. Restart Audio Services

The High Definition Audio Controller in my Devices Manager shows a little yellow triangle, but it shows up under System Devices, not under Sound, video and game controllers or under Audio inputs and outputs.
Your speakers won’t work if it’s not set as the default output. To resolve the problem, you can set the speaker as default. To do so: Right-click the speaker icon at the bottom right corner of the desktop and click on Playback devices. Highlight Speakers or Speakers /Headphones and click Set Default.
Wired speakers attach to either the headphone jack or a USB port. Check the connection to the computer and the power source (probably the wall). Repair your Bluetooth device if that's how you typically get sound, and confirm that the battery isn't dead. Check the volume and mute settings.
