The answer is possibly but it could be other things too. You didn't mention if you are new to diabetes or if you are just new to Metformin. If you are new to diabetes and you have made other changes like diet it could be making you tired also. Everyone is different so just because it impacted them or didn't impact them may not be the same for you.
Tiredness, sleepiness, weakness are well-known side effects of metformin. A few things have helped me deal with it: using extended-release, using brand name Glucophage XR, dividing 500mg doses over the day and evening, and always having it with meals, snacks, or at least a bite of something to eat with it.

Jul 20, 2011. #2. I don't think it is the Metformin but many diabetics have disrupted sleep. I take 2550 of metformin but also take melatonin at night to get a good nights sleep. How high are your bgs before bed? The lower I got mine, the better I sleep. I like to be close to 100 at bedtime.
Type 2. Sep 4, 2009. #6. I had an awful reaction to Metformin when I first started taking it - the Dr. switched me to the Metformin ER (extended release) and everything got much better. The GI issues went away and I felt much better - you might want to look into it - ask your Dr. Good Luck!
Many people are less resistant to insulin in the evenings which might account for the difference in the effects of high carb meals. I would advise staying away from foods which are high carb and choosing ones which don't have so much impact, particularly earlier in the day. That will, hopefully make you feel less sleepy.
Jun 23, 2011. #6. I think fatigue is uncommon, but IS a side effect; I've heard of several people who have had it. I think it's often dismissed by doctors and not reported as a Metformin side effect. I had incredible fatigue from Metformin, but I was taking 1500mg. I took it for 4 months, but the fatigue just got worse.
