West Tennessee borders Arkansas and Missouri to the west. Reelfoot Lake in northwest Tennessee was formed by the 1811–12 New Madrid earthquakes. West Tennessee is located almost entirely within the Mississippi Embayment, part of the Gulf Coastal Plain. Because of this, the terrain is flatter than the eastern parts of the state. [27]
