The first Mass celebrated in Lancaster was said by Edward Fenwick, O.P., the future Archbishop of Cincinnati, in the home of Michael Garaghty, at the corner of Main and High Streets. The cornerstone was laid on December 13, 1967, and the cathedral was completed three years later. The first Papal Mass was celebrated by Pope John Paul II in the cathedral in 1987.
