[2] The average annual snowfall at the park is about 12 feet (370 cm). The park is named for Blue Knob, the second highest mountain in Pennsylvania at 3,146 feet (959 m). [2]

The Salem #2 Mine operated until 1953 and its surrounding land was later acquired by the park. [4] Abandoned mine tunnels lie beneath Hillside Campground and the cabin area.

The campground at Cowans Gap State Park opens in mid April at the beginning of trout season and closes in mid December at the conclusion of deer season. The campground has 224 sites, in two areas, that have enough room for any camping equipment from a tent to a large RV. The area has modern restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers.
The gorge is also protected by the state of Pennsylvania as the 12,163-acre (4,922 ha) Pine Creek Gorge Natural Area, which is the second largest State Natural Area in Pennsylvania. [ 43 ] [ 44 ] Within this area, 699 acres (283 ha) of Colton Point and Leonard Harrison State Parks are designated a State Park Natural Area. [ 45 ]
A campground with six sites opened behind the amusement park in 1962, and as of 2004, the campground covered 160 acres (65 ha) with 500 sites. [ 2 ] On June 22, 1972, both South Branch Roaring Creek and Mugser Run , creeks that run through Knoebels, rose 6 feet (1.8 m) over their banks, swollen with heavy rains from Hurricane Agnes .
