This track was built in 1997 by Honda as part of their effort to bring the IndyCar series to Japan. The Motegi edition Prelude featured an OEM Honda body kit, 17-inch Honda alloy wheels, lowered sports suspension and a Motegi badge on the trunk lid. All of these items, with the exception of the trunk lid badge, were optional on non-Motegi models.
This engine series was used in the 1997-2001 CF4, CF5, CF9, CL3 Honda Accord and Honda Torneo from Japan. It uses a DOHC VTEC cylinder head similar to the H22A found in the Prelude but was designed to comply with many countries' sub-2.0 liter tax.

The J-series is a 60° V6 unlike Honda's existing 90° C-series engines. Also unlike the C series, the J-series was specifically and only designed for transverse mounting. It has a shorter bore spacing (98 mm (3.86 in)), shorter connecting rods and a special smaller crankshaft than the C-series to reduce its size.
