Black studies or Africana studies (with nationally specific terms, such as African American studies and Black Canadian studies), is an interdisciplinary academic field that primarily focuses on the study of the history, culture, and politics of the peoples of the African diaspora and Africa.

The first conference on Critical Issues in Afro-American and African Studies was held at Syracuse University in 1976. [12] During the 1980s, Syracuse students again advocated the administration to widen the pool of African American faculty applicants, hire a department chairperson and in order to increase the staff in the AAS department. [13]
It is named after W. E. B. Du Bois, who was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University (1895). [1] The center was the basis for the foundation of the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research, and became one of several institutes under the umbrella of this center. [2]
